Meta Ghosted Me After Onsite Even Though I Have Pending Deadlines

Navigating the job interview process can be a rollercoaster of emotions, especially when you’re left hanging after an onsite interview. Recently, I found myself in an unsettling situation with Meta that I felt compelled to share.

The Situation

After completing my Virtual Onsite (VO) loop last Tuesday, I promptly followed up via email with my recruiter. I wanted to make it clear that I had a pressing deadline coming up on Wednesday (the day after my email). The recruiter responded on Thursday, assuring me that I would hear back by the latest on Monday.

Fast forward to Monday—no update. And then, nothing on Tuesday either.

Feeling anxious about the looming deadline, I sent follow-up emails on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Still, there was silence. This left me in a frustrating limbo. I needed closure, whether it was a rejection or an offer. The uncertainty was gnawing at me, especially since I was considering negotiating an extension with my current offer. I worried that if I asked for more time, it could signal disinterest to my current employer, potentially jeopardizing that opportunity.

Speculations and Frustrations

Given the lack of communication, I couldn’t help but speculate about what might be going on behind the scenes. My guesses included:

  1. Holidays/Busy Schedules: It’s possible that the team was out for the holidays or simply overwhelmed with work.

  2. Top Candidates: Perhaps they had already found a top candidate and were moving forward without me.

The waiting game was excruciating. I just wanted to vent my frustrations and seek advice from others who might have faced similar situations.

Coding Questions Experience

To add value to this blog post and give back to the community, I also wanted to share my experience with the coding questions during the interview. All my coding questions were tagged as LeetCode Meta, and I had prepared extensively.

During my onsite, I encountered:

  • Two medium-level questions in one round: This felt manageable and aligned with my preparation.
  • One medium/hard question in the other round: To my surprise, they only asked one coding question here. It was a challenging problem, and the verification process took quite a bit of time. I confirmed with my interviewer that they weren’t in a rush to move on to the next question.

This brings me to a point of discussion: How do other candidates perceive the balance of question difficulty and quantity during interviews? It seems there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and experiences can vary widely.

Conclusion

This experience has been a lesson in patience and the unpredictability of the job application process. If you’ve been ghosted after an interview, know that you’re not alone. It’s essential to keep communication open, even if it feels like you’re shouting into a void.

I’d love to hear from anyone else who has experienced something similar. How did you handle it? What strategies did you use to manage the stress of waiting? Let’s share our experiences and support one another through this often turbulent journey.
